Industry’s Highest Capacity System, HI-STORM FW, Loading Campaign Complete at Browns Ferry!

Vertical Cask Transporter (VCT) Hauling the HI-STORM FW Cask to the ISFSI Pad

The first ever HI-STORM FW (Flood & Wind) cask loading campaign came to a successful conclusion on October 23, 2015 at Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Browns Ferry nuclear plant when the 12th cask was safely placed in long term storage on the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) pad. The loading of the MPC-89 multi-purpose canister (MPC) marked the first use of the world’s highest capacity and heat load canister for a BWR site storing 89 BWR assemblies. A total of 1,068 spent fuel assemblies were placed into dry storage during this evolution, setting the record for the highest number of fuel assemblies ever loaded in a single loading campaign at an operating reactor site.

As a result, Browns Ferry removed a total of 342.49 kW from its three spent fuel pools, as part of its efforts to manage the spent fuel pool temperatures. Most importantly, all twelve (12) canisters were loaded safely, with zero incidents, and ahead of schedule. Holtec’s site services team, with superb support from TVA, showed significant improvements in dose performance throughout the campaign by focusing on ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles, resulting in 6.5 mRem of accumulated crew dose per assembly on the final cask.

TVA’s Sr. Spent Fuel Storage Program Manager, Brian Cupp, congratulated the entire team by stating, “Congratulations to everyone on the TEAM effort! You guys successfully loaded the first HI-STORM FW casks in the entire industry, to the tune of 12 systems, which is a monumental effort.” All of us at Holtec thank our colleagues at TVA, especially Lee McCoy, Bill McCoy, Alan Chapman, Joel Armstrong, Brian Cupp, and Zita Martin, whose cooperation and competence made this historical milestone possible.
